At Alkali Ranch, we are a working ranch. We run a herd of red angus X cows for which we are investigating the possibility of being certified "organic". Our cattle currently are managed as all-natural beef under a holistic system. We believe our cows should work for us, not the other way around.
We also graze yearling cattle through the summer months and in the fall of 2009, will have for sale - all natural beef and possibly grass fed beef as well.
Our cattle receive no injections, unless it is deemed that their health requires it. As we get away from the conventional protocals of running a modern herd, our cattle continue to get healthier. Our cow herd is out on pasture as much of the year as possible and with use the of stockpiled forages, we only feed hay for 100-130 days, depending on the year.
Our cows calve in June in tune with nature. The calves are wintered on the cows and weaned in the spring, then run as stocker cattle. No grain is fed to them until the short finish period, or if finished for the grass-fed makret, no grain is fed at all.
